Lee Hall

Lee Hall writes about animal rights for CounterPunch and teaches environmental law. Some of her books include On Their Own Terms, Capers in the Churchyard: Animal Rights Advocacy in the Age of Terror and Dining with Friends: The Art of North American Vegan Cuisine. Lee is the first person I reached out to in 2001 when I decided I would head into a pre-production phase. She was really open to sharing her ideas with me and periodically sent me related news articles with her own take on what each one meant, which I really appreciated. When it came time to set up interviews, I knew I wanted to meet her. She was the only person I spoke with who discussed the history of how particular acts of animal rights activism have become associated with Eco-terrorism.

We arrived at Lee’s house in Philadelphia, met her cats, and I had some time to chat with her while the camera and lighting were set up. She is very passionate and thoughtful in her approach to animal rights. During filming, she was really tuned into all the little noises that the microphones were picking up, like the popping of her sparkling water. As I reviewed her footage, she emerged as someone with some of my favorite quotes.
