Katherine Meyer

Katherine Meyer is a founding partner at Meyer, Glitzenstein & Crystal law firm in Washington, DC where she specializes in, among other things, animal and environmental law.  She is also the co-founder of the Wildlife Advocacy Project. I came across Katherine at a time when I was in communication with a now non-existent non-profit called The Chimpanzee Collaboratory and some of her work was cited in a booklet I had from them discussing the split listing of chimpanzees under the Endangered Species Act. She was also one of the lawyers involved in a lawsuit the Animal Legal Defense Fund brought against the U.S. Department of Agriculture concerning the USDA’s very long delay in setting standards for chimpanzee care. I hope to post the interviews related to this lawsuit at some point, as I spoke with several people involved in it. It’s a remarkable example of the tremendous lengths advocates are going to in an effort to get the U.S. Department of Agriculture to follow through on its own policies under the Animal Welfare Act.

We arrived at Katherine’s firm in Washington, DC on what was another warm day of filming. We spent some time stacking legal volumes in different locations around her office, looking for the perfect location to film that had minimal noise and wouldn’t be too hot. We ended up picking an office, and we kept a fan running during our interview with her, as our lighting equipment raised the temperature in her office even more. Katherine was fascinating to talk with because of her deep and thorough knowledge into how animal protection laws work.
